Sri Lanka’s mobile market changed in 2024. Dialog acquired Airtel Lanka, reducing the country to three active networks,  Dialog, Mobitel, and Hutch. If you have been sending top-ups for years, there is one important update to check before you send again.

This guide explains everything you need to know, including supported networks, the correct international number format, and how to send a mobile top-up to Sri Lanka in just a few minutes.

Sri Lanka’s Mobile Networks in 2026

Sri Lanka currently has three active mobile operators. Knowing which network your recipient uses helps ensure your top-up is delivered successfully.

Network Ownership About Coverage Strength
Dialog Axiata Group (Malaysia) Sri Lanka’s largest mobile network with the widest coverage. Now includes former Airtel Lanka customers. Nationwide across all 25 districts
Mobitel (SLT-Mobitel) Sri Lanka Telecom (state-owned) State-backed operator known for reliable nationwide coverage and competitive data plans. Colombo, Western Province, plus nationwide
Hutch CK Hutchison Holdings (Hong Kong) Budget-friendly network with strong urban coverage. Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Jaffna and other major cities

Following the Airtel Lanka merger, Dialog now serves an estimated 55–60% of Sri Lanka’s mobile subscribers, making it the country’s largest operator.

Important: Airtel Lanka Is Now Dialog

If your family previously used Airtel Lanka, you should now select Dialog when sending a top-up.Dialog completed its acquisition of Airtel Lanka in 2024. Existing customers kept the same phone numbers and SIM cards, but they now use the Dialog network.

That means 075 numbers, which previously belonged to Airtel, are now treated as Dialog numbers.

Quick reminder

  • ✔ Same phone number
  • ✔ Same SIM card
  • ✔ Select Dialog when sending airtime

How to Identify the Network from the Number

Sri Lanka has not yet introduced Mobile Number Portability (MNP), so the number prefix still tells you which network a number belongs to.

Number Prefix Network
071, 077 Dialog
075 Dialog (formerly Airtel)
070, 072 Mobitel
076, 078 Hutch

When you enter a Sri Lankan number on a top-up platform, the network is detected automatically. Always confirm the network shown on screen matches the one your family is actually using before confirming payment. A top-up sent to the wrong network will not land.

Sri Lanka Country Code and Number Format

Sri Lanka’s country code is +94.

When sending a mobile top-up from abroad, remove the leading 0 from the local number and replace it with +94.

Network Local Number International Format Example
Dialog 0771 XXX XXX +94 771 XXX XXX +94 771 234 567
Mobitel 0712 XXX XXX +94 712 XXX XXX +94 712 234 567
Hutch 0781 XXX XXX +94 781 XXX XXX +94 781 234 567
Former Airtel, now Dialog 0751 XXX XXX +94 751 XXX XXX +94 751 234 567

Quick Tip : Always save Sri Lankan numbers in international format (+94) to avoid failed top-ups and typing mistakes in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to the most common questions about sending mobile top-ups to Sri Lanka from abroad.

What happened to Airtel Lanka? Can I still send Airtel top-ups?

No. Airtel Lanka became part of Dialog in 2024. Existing customers kept the same phone numbers, but their network is now Dialog. If your recipient has a 075 number, simply select Dialog when sending a top-up.

How can I tell which network my family uses?

The number prefix identifies the network:

  • 071, 077 — Dialog
  • 075 — Dialog (former Airtel)
  • 070, 072 — Mobitel
  • 076, 078 — Hutch

Most top-up platforms also detect the network automatically before payment.

What number format should I use?

Use the international format by replacing the leading 0 with +94.

For example:

0771 234 567 → +94 771 234 567

Does my recipient need the internet to receive the top-up?

No. The airtime is added directly to their SIM card. They receive a confirmation SMS and can use the credit immediately for calls, texts, or mobile data.

How do I know the top-up was successful?

Your recipient will receive a confirmation message from their mobile network. You can also view the transaction status in your Talk Home app account.

Can I send mobile bundles as well as airtime?

Yes. Depending on the network and current offers, Talk Home app may provide both airtime and bundle options. If available, you can choose the option that best suits your recipient before completing your payment.
