Telecom infrastructure is the machinery that keeps us connected: mobile masts, fibre cables, exchanges, data centres, routers and backup power systems. 

All of it needs electricity, materials and maintenance. A video call may look weightless, but behind it sits a network working around the clock. 

Where the environmental impact comes from 

Most people picture a mobile mast and assume that is the network. 

It is only the visible bit. 

Every call, stream and message passes through powered equipment. Data transmission networks account for roughly 1% to 1.5% of global electricity use. Efficiency has improved, but the network still has a sizeable appetite. 

Masts need steel and concrete. Fibre networks use cables, ducts and cabinets. Servers, antennas and routers contain materials that must be mined, manufactured and transported. 

The carbon bill starts long before anything is switched on. 

A small upgrade with a long shadow 

Amir replaced a usable phone because the newer model promised a better camera and slightly faster downloads. 

The old handset went into a drawer “for emergencies” and stayed there. 

One forgotten phone is hardly a climate disaster. Multiply the habit across millions of homes and offices, though, and the drawer starts looking crowded. 

Networks face a similar problem. New equipment may be more efficient, but making replacements and disposing of old hardware also creates emissions and electronic waste.

More data does not have to mean more emissions 

Mobile data use keeps rising. We stream sharper video, store more in the cloud and expect a signal almost everywhere. 

That sounds like an energy nightmare, but the relationship is not quite one-for-one. 

Modern equipment can move more data using less energy per unit than older technology. Networks can also put parts of the system into low-power modes when demand drops instead of running everything flat out at 3am. 

The GSMA reported in July 2026 that mobile operators’ operational emissions fell by 5% in 2024 and by 13% between 2019 and 2024. It also warned that access to renewable electricity remains a major obstacle, particularly in emerging markets. 

The engine is becoming more efficient. What powers it still matters. 

What net zero means for telecoms 

Net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions as far as possible and balancing only what cannot yet be removed. 

The mobile industry aims to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Getting there will take more than installing a few solar panels and taking a cheerful photo for the annual report. 

Operators must tackle electricity use, vehicles, backup generators, purchased equipment and emissions hidden across supply chains. 

A company may use renewable power in its offices while factories making its network equipment still depend on fossil fuels. That is where the tidy marketing story gets a bit messy. 

What is actually changing? 

Networks are replacing older hardware, buying renewable electricity and matching energy use more closely with demand. 

Some operators share towers instead of building separate sites next door. Others refurbish routers and network parts so useful equipment does not head straight for the scrap heap. 

Longer device life matters too. Repairable phones, extended software support and proper recycling can reduce unnecessary replacement. 

There is no giant green button in a control room. Progress looks more like fixing hundreds of small leaks while rebuilding the plumbing. 

Telecoms can help elsewhere 

The sector has a footprint, but connectivity can help other industries reduce theirs. 

Remote meetings may replace business travel. Smart meters can expose wasted energy. Connected transport can improve routes, while remote monitoring can reduce unnecessary site visits. 

The ITU has created a method for measuring these wider effects because the environmental benefits should not simply be assumed. A video call only saves carbon when it replaces a higher-emission activity rather than becoming one more thing we do. 

“Digital” and “green” are not automatically the same thing. 

The real test 

Telecoms will not reach net zero through clever slogans and a few recycled SIM cards. 

The industry needs cleaner electricity, efficient networks, longer-lasting equipment and tighter control over supply-chain emissions. 

Consumers have a role too. Keeping devices longer, returning unused phones and repairing rather than replacing can all help. 

Connectivity is part of everyday life. The challenge is keeping the signal strong without leaving an unnecessarily heavy footprint behind it.
