A good commuter SIM needs three things: plenty of data, reliable coverage along the journey and enough flexibility that you are not stuck paying for a plan long after your routine changes.

SMARTY currently offers unlimited 5G and 4G data for £20 on a one-month rolling plan, with no long contract or credit check. 

It is a straightforward option for commuters who download large files, stream across several services or tether a laptop occasionally. 

iD Mobile also offers unlimited data, including a £18 one-month option and lower-priced 12 or 24-month versions. Its unlimited plans include 5G and allow personal hotspot use without an extra tethering charge. 

That makes iD useful when the commute sometimes turns into a mobile office. 

Do you really need unlimited data? 

Not everyone does. 

Someone who streams music and downloads programmes at home may be perfectly comfortable with 50GB or 100GB. 

Unlimited or ultra-high data makes more sense when you: 

• Stream video most days 
• Watch live sport while travelling 
• Use your phone as a hotspot 
• Regularly download large files 
• Rarely connect to trusted Wi-Fi 

Also check network performance on your usual train line, bus route and workplace. 

The cheapest unlimited SIM becomes rather poor value when the signal disappears halfway between home and the office.
