Heat Slows Down 5G

Because your phone would rather give you slower 5G than cook itself. 

Modern smartphones constantly monitor internal temperature. 

If things get too warm, the phone can deliberately reduce performance, slow charging and even lower the power used by its mobile radios. 

That can mean slower 5G speeds or a temporary move away from 5G altogether

Google’s current Pixel support guidance is unusually direct about this: when a Pixel becomes too hot, it may partially or fully turn off mobile data or Wi-Fi, including 5G.  

Apple says something similar. On an overheated iPhone, the cellular signal can weaken as the radios enter a low-power state.  

The Speed Test That Got Worse Every Time 

Ben was testing 5G on a hot afternoon. 

First result: 280Mbps. 

Very nice. 

Second: 210Mbps. 

Third: 130Mbps. 

By the fourth test, the phone felt noticeably warm and the speed had fallen again. 

Naturally, he assumed the mast was getting worse every 90 seconds. 

The mast was probably fine. 

He’d been hammering the modem, processor and screen while standing in the sun. 

The phone was slowly applying the brakes. 

5G Can Produce Plenty of Heat 

Your modem and radio antennas have to work hard when transferring large amounts of data. 

Google lists several activities that can make Pixel phones warmer, including: 

  • Streaming over 5G  
  • Uploading or downloading lots of data  
  • Tethering  
  • Video calls  
  • Navigation  
  • Recording high-definition video  
  • Doing heavy tasks while charging  

That is basically the daily routine of anyone filming, navigating and uploading content from a phone. 

Add a hot car dashboard and you’ve built a small thermal stress test. 

What Happens When the Phone Gets Too Hot? 

Manufacturers use thermal controls to protect internal components and the battery.

Network speeds limited 5G becomes slower 
5G disabled Phone may fall to 4G 
Charging slowed/stopped Battery charges very slowly

Pixel’s temperature diagnostics specifically say that even in its Warm state, settings such as screen brightness and network speeds may be reduced.  

That’s about as clear as it gets. 

The slowdown can be intentional. 

Weak Signal Can Make the Heat Worse 

There’s an annoying loop here. 

Weak mobile signal makes the phone work harder to maintain a connection. 

That uses more power. 

More power creates more heat. 

Then the phone starts reducing radio performance because it’s hot. 

You move farther from the mast and the whole thing can snowball. 

Google’s support guidance notes that poor cellular coverage can increase power consumption, while high mobile-data activity itself can also make the phone warmer.  

So someone using 5G in a weak-signal area on a summer afternoon gets hit twice. 

Charging While Using 5G Doesn’t Help 

Charging creates heat too. 

Especially wireless charging. 

Now combine: 

  • Fast charging  
  • 5G hotspot  
  • Google Maps  
  • Screen brightness at maximum  
  • Direct sunlight  

Your phone isn’t being dramatic when it slows down. 

It’s requesting annual leave. 

If you’re troubleshooting 5G performance, unplug the charger and let the handset cool before running another test. 

How to Get the Speed Back 

Stop the heavy task for a few minutes. 

Move out of direct sunlight. 

Take the phone out of a thick case if it feels very warm. 

Stop charging temporarily. 

Turn the screen off and let the handset cool naturally. 

Do not stick it in a freezer or press it against an ice pack. 

Condensation and sudden temperature changes can create a much more expensive problem than slow 5G. 

Once the phone returns to a normal temperature, performance controls should ease automatically. 

Apple says devices are designed for ambient temperatures between 0°C and 35°C during use.

That can mean reduced network speed, weaker radio performance or a temporary drop away from 5G. 

So if your phone feels like a hand warmer and the speed test keeps getting worse, stop testing it. 

The result isn’t asking for another benchmark. 

The phone is asking for shade.
