Can a Phone Case Affect 5G

Yes, a phone case can reduce 5G signal or speed, but most ordinary plastic, silicone or leather cases are unlikely to make a dramatic difference. 

The bigger troublemakers are cases containing large amounts of metal, badly positioned conductive parts or designs that sit directly over important antenna areas. 

And because modern phones use several antennas around their edges for 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi and GPS, you don’t necessarily need to cover the whole handset to make reception worse. 

Sometimes the fancy case protecting your £1,000 phone is also quietly making its signal work harder. 

The Case That Cost Two Bars of 5G 

Luke had been moaning about poor 5G inside his flat for weeks. 

Near the kitchen window, his phone bounced between 5G and 4G. 

He assumed the mast was simply rubbish indoors. 

Then he removed the chunky metal bumper case he’d bought online. 

5G returned. 

He put the case back on. 

4G. 

Off again. 

5G. 

At that point, even Luke had to stop blaming the mobile network. 

This isn’t just anecdotal. A 2024 study examining smartphone 5G antenna performance tested a handset with and without a metal phone case. Under that particular test setup, the measured 5G signal changed from around −67 dBm without the case to −94 dBm with the metal case fitted

That’s a 27 dB difference

It doesn’t mean every metal case will cause exactly that drop, but it shows how badly conductive materials can interfere with antenna performance when the design isn’t antenna-friendly. 

Why Does Metal Matter So Much? 

Your phone is basically a very clever two-way radio. 

It has to receive signals from the mast and transmit data back. 

Metal near an antenna can alter how that antenna radiates, detune it or partially shield the radio waves. 

Research into 5G handset antenna systems has long highlighted the engineering difficulty created by metal phone frames because nearby metal can reduce antenna bandwidth and efficiency unless the antenna system is specifically designed around it.

The important distinction is between a phone designed with metal around its antennas and a random aftermarket metal shell wrapped around it afterwards. 

Manufacturers engineer the first one. 

Somebody selling £12 cases online may have been slightly less thorough. 

Why 5G Can Make the Problem More Noticeable 

5G phones use multiple antennas and frequency bands. 

The handset may also use technologies such as MIMO, where several antenna paths work together to improve capacity and reliability. 

Interfering with one antenna area can therefore affect more than the little signal icon. 

You might notice: 

  • 5G disappearing more often 
  • Lower download speeds 
  • Poorer upload speeds 
  • Increased battery drain 
  • Calls dropping to another network layer 
  • Worse indoor reception 

The effect may also be much easier to spot when your existing signal is already borderline. 

If you’ve got excellent reception beside a mast, losing a little signal might barely matter. 

If you’re already clinging onto weak indoor 5G, the same loss can be enough to knock the phone onto 4G. 

What About MagSafe Cases and Magnets? 

Don’t automatically assume magnets mean bad cellular reception. 

Modern phones and manufacturer-approved accessories are designed around magnetic attachment systems. 

The problem is more likely to come from badly positioned conductive material, large metal plates or poorly designed third-party accessories than from the simple fact that a case contains magnets. 

That’s why one of the easiest tests requires absolutely no technical knowledge. 

Take the case off. 

How to Test Your Case Properly 

Stand in one location. 

Keep the phone in roughly the same position. 

Run one speed test with the case on. 

Note: 

Then remove the case, wait for the phone to reconnect properly and test again. 

Don’t run twelve tests in a row. 

Mobile speeds move naturally, so you’re looking for a repeatable pattern, not one lucky number. 

If the phone consistently shows stronger reception or dramatically better performance without the case, you’ve found a fairly convincing suspect. 

Try the same test somewhere with weaker signal too. 

That is often where case interference becomes most obvious.

Most normal phone cases aren’t secretly destroying your 5G. 

But metal-heavy or badly designed cases absolutely deserve suspicion when signal problems begin immediately after fitting one. 

Take it off. 

Test again. 

If nothing changes, put the case back on and investigate coverage or congestion. 

If 5G suddenly wakes up, you’ve saved yourself an afternoon of resetting network settings. 

Sometimes the network problem really is the thing wrapped around the phone.
