New SIM Activation Troubleshooting

You insert your new SIM.

Activation completes.

Then…

No calls.

No texts.

No data.

A new SIM that does not work after activation does not necessarily mean the SIM is faulty.

“Activation” can refer to the network recognising the SIM, while separate things still need to be correct for your plan, calls, texts and mobile data to work.

Check the SIM is seated correctly, the phone is unlocked, the right line is enabled, your plan or credit is active, the network is selected correctly and your handset supports the network’s voice technology.

For Talk Home Mobile, a normal new SIM should generally activate automatically after insertion, with *123*9# available as a manual activation option if needed.

Activation Is Not the Same as “Everything Is Ready”

This is one of the biggest sources of confusion.

There can be several stages:

SIM activation

The mobile network recognises your SIM.

Account registration

Your SIM is associated correctly with your customer account.

Plan activation

Your minutes, SMS and data allowance are active.

Network configuration

Your phone has the right network settings.

Number port

Your existing mobile number moves across if requested.

These can happen separately.

So:

“The website says activated.”

does not automatically prove every part of the mobile service is ready.

1. Remove and Reinsert the SIM

Start with the physical connection.

Switch the phone off if the manufacturer recommends it.

Remove the SIM tray.

Check:

  • correct SIM size
  • SIM sits flat
  • tray is not damaged
  • contacts look clean
  • SIM orientation is correct

Reinsert it fully.

Talk Home’s activation guidance also recommends checking that the SIM is mounted properly if activation does not behave as expected.

2. Restart the Phone

New SIM inserted?

Restart.

This gives the handset a fresh opportunity to:

  • read the SIM
  • load carrier settings
  • register with the mobile network
  • establish voice/data services

Do not assume the device has immediately refreshed everything just because the SIM tray clicked into place.

3. Make Sure the Phone Is Unlocked

A handset locked to another mobile network may reject a new provider’s SIM.

Signs include messages such as:

  • SIM not supported
  • Network locked
  • Invalid SIM
  • Enter network unlock code

If your phone was originally purchased from another provider, confirm whether it is unlocked.

A SIM cannot solve a handset network lock.

4. Check the Correct SIM Line Is Enabled

Dual-SIM phone?

Go to your mobile/network settings.

Make sure the new SIM is:

  • enabled
  • selected for mobile data where required
  • available for calls
  • available for SMS

It is easy to insert a perfectly functioning second SIM and then continue using the first one for every service.

5. Check Whether the SIM Is Actually Active

For Talk Home Mobile, current support guidance says a normal new SIM generally activates automatically when inserted.

If it does not, Talk Home provides *123*9# as a manual activation code.

If the handset displays an activation-related error after that, contact support rather than repeatedly trying random USSD codes from other networks.

6. Check Whether You Have an Active Plan or Credit

This is crucial.

A SIM can register successfully while you still lack usable allowance.

Talk Home’s activation guide explains that users may need to purchase a plan or add credit separately after getting the SIM working.

The company also provides a separate process for activating mobile plans through the website/account.

So if:

signal appears

but:

calls say insufficient balance

check your plan rather than reactivating the SIM.

7. Test Calls, SMS and Data Separately

Do not say:

“My SIM doesn’t work.”

Test three services.

Call

Make one normal call.

SMS

Send one plain text.

Data

Turn Wi-Fi off and load a website.

Now you know what is actually failing.

ResultLikely Area
Nothing worksSIM/activation/network
Calls + SMS work, data failsAPN/data settings
Data works, calls failVoLTE/voice provisioning
Calls work, SMS failsSMS setup
Temporary number worksPort not complete
Only outgoing failsplan/credit/call restriction

This is far more useful.

8. Check Mobile Data/APN Settings

If calls and texts work but mobile data does not, APN configuration becomes relevant.

APN stands for:

Access Point Name

It tells the phone how to connect to the provider’s mobile-data service.

Most modern phones configure this automatically from the SIM or carrier settings.

If it does not:

  • use the provider’s official APN details
  • avoid random forum settings
  • restart after changes

Do not edit APN settings when data already works.

9. Check Automatic Network Selection

A new SIM should generally connect to the correct network automatically.

Talk Home’s support guidance says the device normally identifies/selects the network automatically, while manual selection is available where required.

If you previously forced your phone onto another operator while roaming, switch network selection back to automatic.

Wait a few minutes.

Then test again.

10. Check VoLTE if Data Works but Calls Don’t

This is increasingly important.

The UK’s 3G networks are now switched off, while 2G is gradually being phased out.

Modern calls therefore rely heavily on VoLTE.

Talk Home Mobile supports VoLTE on compatible phones and recommends ensuring handset software is up to date.

If:

  • 4G/5G works
  • normal calls fail

check:

  • VoLTE/4G Calling
  • handset compatibility
  • software updates
  • provider provisioning

11. Is Your Number Transfer Still in Progress?

If you are keeping your existing number, the new SIM may initially have a temporary mobile number.

Talk Home’s own activation guide notes that customers transferring an old number can temporarily see a different number until the port completes.

Do not mistake:

“My old number hasn’t moved yet”

for:

“My SIM is not active.”

Try calling from the temporary number if it is available.

12. Try the SIM in Another Phone

This isolates the device.

New SIM works elsewhere

Original handset/settings issue.

New SIM fails everywhere

SIM/account/network activation issue.

Use an unlocked compatible phone.

Testing a 2026 network SIM inside an ancient handset that cannot support modern voice services may produce misleading results.

A Real-Life Scenario

Luke orders a new SIM.

He puts it into his phone.

Full signal appears.

But he cannot use mobile data.

He assumes activation failed.

Then he makes a call.

Works.

Sends an SMS.

Works.

Only data is broken.

That tells him the SIM is already active.

The problem is now much narrower.

He checks mobile-data/APN configuration rather than repeatedly trying to “activate” an already active SIM.

That’s the difference between symptom-based troubleshooting and guessing.

Talk Home Mobile: Correct Activation Sequence

For a standard new Talk Home Mobile SIM, the current guidance can be simplified as:

  1. insert the SIM
  2. allow automatic activation
  3. use *123*9# if required
  4. set up/access your account
  5. activate a plan or add credit
  6. test calls
  7. test SMS
  8. test mobile data

Talk Home’s current plan guidance says customers can activate eligible plans through the website/dashboard.

Don’t Confuse a Replacement SIM With a New SIM

Very important.

A replacement SIM often needs the provider to transfer an existing number/service onto it.

That can involve a different activation process.

For Talk Home Mobile specifically, current replacement-SIM instructions say customers receiving the replacement should contact customer service to complete the SIM replacement rather than simply treating it as a fresh line.

If yours is a replacement, follow the replacement process.

What If the SIM Says “No Service”?

Check:

  • SIM seated correctly
  • handset unlocked
  • automatic network selection
  • another location
  • another phone
  • account/SIM activation

If the same SIM shows no service in multiple compatible phones and locations, contact the provider.

What If You See “Emergency Calls Only”?

That usually means the phone can detect mobile infrastructure but has not registered normally for your service.

Possible areas include:

  • activation
  • SIM problem
  • account status
  • network selection
  • coverage
  • handset lock

Restart and re-register.

Then test another handset.

What If Data Works but No Voice?

Treat it as a VoLTE/voice issue.

Do not change working APN settings.

The UK’s 3G shutdown makes correct 4G voice support particularly relevant now.

When Should You Contact Support?

Contact your provider if:

  • manual activation fails
  • SIM fails in another compatible phone
  • account says active but no services work
  • network cannot register
  • number transfer is stuck
  • VoLTE does not provision correctly
  • activation has been pending unusually long

Tell them exactly what works.

For example:

“SIM shows 4G and data works, but all normal voice calls fail in two handsets.”

Much better than:

“New SIM broken.”

Don’t Factory Reset Your Phone

Not yet.

A factory reset is an extreme response to a problem that is usually caused by:

  • activation
  • plan status
  • network selection
  • SIM seating
  • carrier configuration

Work through the specific service checks first.

Your photo library does not deserve to suffer because your APN was missing.

New SIMs Should Be Simple — Diagnose Them Simply

Separate the problem into stages.

Does the phone see the SIM?

Does it register with the network?

Is the plan active?

Do calls work?

Do texts work?

Does data work?

By the end of those six questions, “my SIM doesn’t work” usually becomes a much more useful diagnosis.

And useful diagnoses get fixed faster.
