Manage Data for Social Media

Social media can chew through mobile data far faster than people expect.

It is not usually the odd photo doing the damage. It is autoplay video, Reels, Stories, TikToks, livestreams and that harmless-looking five-minute scroll that somehow turns into 45 minutes.

Ofcom says UK adults now spend an average of four and a half hours online every day, with most of that time spent on smartphones. Adults use an average of 41 smartphone apps per month.

If social media takes a decent chunk of your day, managing data is less about quitting the apps and more about stopping them from behaving as if every connection is unlimited.

The Bus Journey That Ate the Data Allowance

Jess had a 20GB monthly plan and never thought of herself as a heavy data user.

She did not download films. She rarely used her phone as a hotspot. Mostly Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and YouTube.

Then her data ran out with nine days left in the month.

The culprit was her commute.

Forty minutes there, forty minutes back, almost entirely spent watching short-form video over mobile data.

None of those videos felt particularly large. Hundreds of them together were another story.

UK mobile users collectively consumed more than 1.2 billion GB per month in 2025, up 18% in a year. Ofcom says 5G traffic alone grew 53%.

Jess was hardly alone.

Find Out Where the Data Is Going

Both Android and iPhone show mobile data usage by app.

Check it before changing your plan.

You might discover TikTok has used 12GB while Spotify has barely made a dent.

Habit What it does to data
Scrolling text and photos Fairly light
Instagram Reels Much heavier
TikTok sessions Heavy
YouTube in HD Very heavy
Livestreaming Heavy and continuous
Uploading videos Can use plenty of upstream data
Using Wi-Fi for uploads Saves mobile allowance

Once you know the guilty app, you can actually do something about it.

Turn Down Video Quality

Most social apps are obsessed with making video look as sharp as possible.

Your data allowance may have other ideas.

TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and similar apps offer settings that can reduce mobile data consumption. Look for options labelled Data Saver, Use less mobile data or video-quality controls.

The picture may be slightly softer.

On a six-inch phone screen while standing at a bus stop, you will probably survive.

You should also stop apps downloading high-quality media in the background when you are not actually looking at it.

Save Uploading for Wi-Fi

People often think only watching video uses lots of data.

Creators get hit from the other direction.

Posting a high-resolution video means uploading a large file. Backing up the original to Google Photos, iCloud or another cloud service can upload it all over again.

If you post regularly, wait for trusted Wi-Fi before uploading finished videos or backing up your camera roll.

Your followers are unlikely to riot because the Reel went live at 7:30 rather than 7:12.

Do You Actually Need Unlimited Data?

Maybe.

But check first.

Ofcom found that 39% of UK pay-monthly customers had plans containing more than 50GB, while only 5% actually used more than 50GB.

That is a lot of people paying for data they never touch.

If you consistently use 70GB, 100GB or more, a bigger plan makes sense.

If you use 18GB one month and 23GB the next, unlimited data may simply be expensive peace of mind.

Where Talk Home Mobile Fits

Talk Home Mobile offers 5G across its current SIM-only plans, with plans covering lighter users through to much larger data allowances. Its site also provides a data-plan calculator to help customers estimate what they actually need.

That is a better starting point than automatically picking the largest plan.

For heavy social users, choose enough headroom that you are not rationing Reels during the final week of every month, but do not pay for hundreds of unused gigabytes purely because the number looks impressive.

Final Thoughts

Social media data disappears quietly.

No single TikTok looks dangerous. No Instagram Reel feels like it has just taken a bite out of your allowance.

Then suddenly your phone says you have 500MB left and it is only the 19th.

Check which apps are doing the damage, use their data-saving settings, upload big files over Wi-Fi and choose a plan based on what you actually consume.

You do not need to stop scrolling.

Although after four straight hours on TikTok, your data allowance might not be the only thing asking for a break.
