Best SIM Deals for Setting Up a Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot Router

A mobile Wi-Fi router is one of the easiest ways to get internet without waiting for fibre, booking an engineer or turning your phone into a permanent hotspot. 

Pop in a compatible SIM, switch the router on and you’ve got Wi-Fi. 

The bit worth spending some time on is the SIM. 

For a dedicated 4G or 5G router, data-only SIMs are usually the safest bet because they’re actually designed for tablets, dongles and mobile broadband equipment. A cheap phone SIM might look tempting, but some providers restrict using their plans inside routers. 

So don’t buy purely on the biggest number of gigabytes you can find. 

The £10 SIM That Wasn’t Such a Bargain 

Dan needed internet for three weeks while waiting for broadband to be installed in a new flat. 

He already had a 5G router, so he found a cheap phone SIM online, stuck it in and congratulated himself on avoiding an expensive broadband contract. 

It worked. 

For a while. 

Then the connection became unreliable, and after digging through the provider’s terms he realised the SIM wasn’t really intended for permanent router use. 

He eventually switched to a proper data-only plan. 

A couple of quid saved at the start had created several evenings of unplugging the router, restarting it and muttering at blinking lights. 

The lesson is fairly simple: tethering from a phone and putting a SIM directly inside a router are not always treated the same way by networks. 

Which SIM Deals Make Sense? 

Current UK options vary quite a bit. 

SMARTY’s current data-only range starts at £5 for 2GB and goes up to unlimited data for £20 per month. The plans run for one month, include 5G where available and can be changed or cancelled without a long contract. SMARTY specifically promotes these SIMs for hotspotting and broadband backup. 

That makes the unlimited option particularly useful if the router is going to replace normal home broadband. 

Three takes a slightly different approach. 

Its mobile broadband range is built around MiFi devices and data-only SIMs, with 1-month, 12-month and 24-month options available. Some of its portable routers can connect more than 30 devices at once. 

Three also currently sells a PAYG 120GB data SIM for £40 that lasts for 12 months. 

That isn’t the plan I’d pick for a house full of Netflix addicts, but as emergency broadband in a caravan, holiday home or spare router, it makes much more sense. 

Work Out How Much Data You Actually Need 

This is where people often underestimate things. 

Email and browsing barely make a dent. 

Streaming does. 

Netflix says an HD stream can use up to around 3GB per hour. So if two people watch two hours of HD video every evening, you could burn through roughly 360GB in a month. 

Suddenly that 100GB deal doesn’t look enormous. 

Gaming itself doesn’t always use loads of data, but downloading the games certainly can. Modern titles and console updates can easily run into tens of gigabytes. 

For one person doing office work, browsing and the odd bit of streaming, 100GB may be plenty. 

For a family using the router as its main connection, unlimited data is far less hassle. 

Check Coverage Before Buying Anything 

A 5G router does not guarantee a 5G connection. 

It still needs decent network coverage at the property. 

Before ordering a SIM, check the provider’s coverage map for the exact postcode. If possible, test a SIM from that network in a phone first. 

Router placement matters too. 

Putting a 5G router in a cupboard underneath the stairs because it keeps the hallway tidy may also be a brilliant way of ruining the signal. 

Try it near a window and move it around before deciding the network is rubbish. 

What About Normal Phone SIM Deals? 

This is where you need to read the small print. 

Some mobile networks happily allow customers to use their whole allowance through personal hotspot tethering. SMARTY, for example, says customers can hotspot their full UK data allowance. 

That still doesn’t automatically mean every phone plan is approved for permanent use inside a standalone router. 

iD Mobile currently offers unlimited phone data from £18 on a one-month plan and explicitly allows unlimited personal hotspot tethering. 

Useful if your phone is creating the hotspot. 

For a dedicated router, check device restrictions first. 

Where Talk Home Mobile Fits 

Talk Home Mobile currently offers 5G SIM-only deals with large data allowances and no data throttling on eligible plans. 

However, its current plan terms are aimed at personal handset use and state that tethering or using the SIM outside a handset may be restricted. 

So if the goal is specifically to put a SIM permanently inside a Wi-Fi router, choose a plan that explicitly supports that use. 

For normal smartphone data, Talk Home Mobile remains a strong option. For dedicated mobile broadband hardware, the plan terms matter more than simply finding the biggest allowance. 

Final Thoughts 

Setting up mobile Wi-Fi is easy. 

Choosing the right SIM is where people get caught out. 

If the router is replacing home broadband, look for unlimited data and make sure router use is explicitly supported. SMARTY’s unlimited data-only plan and Three’s dedicated mobile broadband options are strong places to start. 

For occasional use, a smaller data-only plan can save money. 

And whatever you choose, test the network where the router will actually sit. 

Because an unlimited 5G SIM with one bar of signal is still, technically, unlimited.
