Which UK Mobile Networks Still Offer Free EU Roaming?

Free EU roaming has not completely disappeared from UK mobile plans. It has simply become far less straightforward. 

O2, Tesco Mobile, iD Mobile, SMARTY, Lebara, Talkmobile, giffgaff and Talk Home Mobile still include European roaming on eligible plans. EE, Vodafone and Three also offer it on selected tariffs, although it is not automatically included with every deal. 

The important bit is the data limit. “Use your phone like you do at home” often means “up to a much smaller allowance than you use at home”. 

The holiday photo that ate the allowance 

A friend of mine travelled to Italy assuming his 100GB UK plan meant he had 100GB to use abroad. 

It did not. 

His network included EU roaming, but only the first 5GB of data. Between Google Maps, video calls and automatically backing up every holiday photo, he burned through the lot before the trip was halfway over. 

The roaming itself was free. What came after the limit was not. 

That is why the data cap matters more than the cheerful beach photo on the network’s website. 

Free EU roaming compared 

These limits and destination lists can change, so check the exact tariff before booking anything more ambitious than a weekend in Calais. 

O2 remains one of the simplest options 

O2 includes European roaming across its Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go plans. 

Customers can use their minutes, texts and up to 25GB of data in its Europe Zone without paying an additional daily fee. 

That makes O2 fairly easy to understand. There is still a fair-use limit, but you do not need to hunt for a special roaming pass before every trip. 

Tesco Mobile, iD and SMARTY offer solid value 

Tesco Mobile has extended its Home From Home benefit and says it has no current plans to introduce EU roaming fees. Customers can use their allowances in 48 destinations across Europe and beyond. 

iD Mobile includes roaming in 50 destinations across all plans, with an official fair-use limit of up to 30GB for newer customers. 

SMARTY includes calls, texts and up to 12GB of plan data while travelling in supported European destinations. 

None of these is especially glamorous. They simply let you land, switch on your phone and get on with finding the hotel—which is arguably the whole point. 

Budget networks still have useful options 

Lebara includes EU roaming with its SIM-only plans, allowing up to 30GB of data depending on the UK allowance. 

Talkmobile includes roaming across 47 European destinations, although only 5GB of data is available before further options may be needed. 

giffgaff also includes roaming, but its 5GB limit can disappear quickly if you stream video or use a hotspot. 

Talk Home Mobile includes free roaming across more than 45 EU and EEA destinations. The amount of roaming data depends on the plan, so the individual tariff details are worth checking. 

What about EE, Vodafone and Three? 

The larger networks have not abandoned inclusive roaming completely, but they tend to reserve it for selected plans. 

EE currently advertises SIM offers with included EU roaming, while many standard tariffs otherwise require a daily charge or roaming pass. 

Vodafone includes European roaming on eligible Euro Roam plans, covering Zones A and B. 

Three includes Go Roam in Europe on selected Pay Monthly plans and qualifying Pay As You Go packs; other customers may face a daily fee. 

Which one should you choose? 

For the most generous straightforward allowances, O2, iD Mobile and Lebara are strong options. 

SMARTY suits lighter travellers, while Tesco Mobile is attractive for people who want roaming without changing how they use their normal plan. 

Talkmobile and giffgaff still qualify as free roaming, but their smaller data caps need watching. 

Before switching, check three things: the destination list, the roaming data limit and what happens after you reach it. 

Free EU roaming is still alive. 

It just arrives with rather more small print than it used to.
