Phone Stuck on 2G Calls

Your phone shows 4G.

You press Call.

Suddenly:

2G.

You hang up.

Back to 4G.

That behaviour usually means your phone is using legacy circuit-switched fallback for voice instead of making the call through VoLTE.

In simple terms, your data runs on 4G or 5G, but when you make a normal phone call, the device falls back to an older network because 4G voice is not working or available.

In the UK in 2026, this matters more than it used to.

All major UK 3G networks are already switched off, while 2G networks are gradually moving towards retirement too.

If your phone still depends on 2G for every call, now is the time to work out why.

What Should Normally Happen?

A modern compatible phone using a provider with VoLTE should usually be able to place ordinary calls while staying connected to 4G/LTE.

Talk Home Mobile describes VoLTE exactly this way: voice calling remains on 4G rather than dropping back to older 2G or 3G technology.

So:

Before call

4G

During call

4G

After call

4G

If you instead see:

Before call

4G

During call

2G

After call

4G

your phone is probably not using VoLTE for that call.

What Is 2G?

2G is an older generation of mobile technology dating back decades.

It introduced major improvements over the earliest analogue mobile networks and remains useful for certain legacy voice, SMS and machine-to-machine services.

But it was never designed for today’s mobile-data expectations.

The UK industry is gradually moving away from 2G as networks invest more heavily in 4G and 5G.

Ofcom says UK operators are preparing to retire 2G over the coming years following completion of the 3G shutdown.

Why Did Phones Used to Drop to 3G?

Before VoLTE became widespread, many 4G phones used a method commonly called circuit-switched fallback.

The phone used 4G for data.

When a voice call began, it switched to an older network that handled traditional voice.

For many UK users, that meant 3G.

But 3G is now gone across the main UK mobile networks.

So a device without working VoLTE may end up relying on 2G where that service remains available.

The Main Cause: VoLTE Isn’t Working

VoLTE means:

Voice over LTE

LTE is the technology underpinning standard 4G.

VoLTE allows ordinary carrier voice calls to travel over the 4G network.

If your phone drops to 2G, check:

  • VoLTE/4G Calling setting
  • device support
  • network/provider support
  • SIM provisioning
  • software updates

Those are the major areas.

1. Check for a VoLTE or 4G Calling Setting

On Android, wording varies.

Look for:

  • VoLTE Calls
  • 4G Calling
  • Enhanced LTE
  • Voice over LTE

Talk Home Mobile’s current Android guidance points users towards:

Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → VoLTE Calls

although menus can vary by device.

Turn it on where available.

2. Check iPhone Voice & Data Settings

Talk Home Mobile’s current iOS guidance for supported modern iPhones directs users through:

Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Voice & Data

with VoLTE available where supported.

Apple menus change across iOS versions and carriers, so use the options shown on your actual handset.

If no VoLTE control appears, that does not always mean the phone lacks VoLTE; some carriers manage the feature automatically.

3. Update Your Phone

Carrier compatibility often depends on software.

Talk Home Mobile specifically advises keeping handset software updated for reliable VoLTE operation.

Updates can contain:

  • modem fixes
  • carrier profiles
  • network configuration changes
  • VoLTE support

An otherwise capable phone can behave badly when several years behind on software.

4. Check Whether the Phone Actually Supports Your Provider’s VoLTE

This is more nuanced than:

“My phone has 4G.”

4G data support does not guarantee VoLTE support with every provider.

A handset needs:

  • compatible hardware
  • compatible software
  • appropriate carrier configuration

Imported phones can sometimes be particularly tricky because a model designed for another market may not contain the carrier profile expected by a UK network.

5. Check the SIM

An old SIM may be worth discussing with your network provider.

Modern voice features can depend on correct account and SIM provisioning.

If:

  • handset is compatible
  • settings look correct
  • software is current
  • call always drops to 2G

ask the provider whether VoLTE is enabled on your line.

6. Test Wi-Fi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling does not directly prove cellular VoLTE works, but it gives you another modern voice route.

Ofcom recommends Wi-Fi Calling where mobile coverage is difficult indoors.

Talk Home Mobile supports Wi-Fi Calling alongside VoLTE on compatible phones.

If Wi-Fi Calling works but cellular calls consistently fall back to 2G, your account/handset clearly supports some modern voice service, but cellular VoLTE still deserves investigation.

7. Check Network Mode

Use an automatic mode that includes 4G/5G.

Avoid leaving the phone forced to:

2G only

after troubleshooting or travel.

Likewise, some unusual “LTE only” modes can break calls on devices where VoLTE does not work.

Automatic network selection is normally the best everyday choice.

What Happens to Mobile Data During a 2G Call?

Potentially:

not much good.

2G data is dramatically slower than 4G/5G.

Depending on network/device behaviour, you may notice:

  • data becomes slow
  • apps struggle
  • navigation updates poorly
  • webpages stop loading normally

VoLTE avoids that fallback.

Talk Home Mobile lists the ability to maintain 4G data while calling as one of the benefits of VoLTE.

Does 2G Calling Mean Something Is Broken?

Not necessarily today.

If your provider still operates 2G, the call may work exactly as designed.

The issue is future readiness.

Ofcom confirms UK operators are gradually working towards 2G shutdown.

A phone that depends entirely on 2G voice could therefore become increasingly problematic as legacy service changes.

That makes it sensible to fix VoLTE compatibility now rather than waiting for 2G coverage to disappear.

Why Did My Phone Start Doing This After 3G Was Switched Off?

Because 3G may previously have been your fallback.

Before the shutdown:

4G data → 3G voice

After shutdown:

4G data → 2G voice

You may therefore suddenly notice a 2G indicator even though you never changed handset or SIM.

The network environment changed around you.

What If My Phone Stays on 4G but Calls Still Fail?

Then your issue is different.

Possibilities include:

  • failed VoLTE registration
  • voice provisioning
  • call barring
  • network fault

Staying on 4G does not prove a call was successfully established.

But dropping to 2G is an especially useful clue that VoLTE is not being used.

What If My Network Has No 2G?

This becomes even more important.

If VoLTE does not work and no legacy fallback exists, normal voice calls may fail altogether.

That is why network modernisation places more pressure on:

  • device compatibility
  • SIM provisioning
  • software support

Modern mobile calling is no longer something a 4G data connection can ignore.

A Real-Life Example

Ahmed has a phone that says 4G all day.

Every time he calls someone, it changes to 2G.

He assumes that’s normal.

Then he notices mobile data becomes almost unusable during calls.

He checks his settings.

VoLTE is off.

He enables it.

The next call stays on 4G.

Data continues working normally.

The phone did not become “more 4G.”

The voice call simply started using the 4G network too.

Talk Home Mobile and VoLTE

Talk Home Mobile currently includes VoLTE on compatible devices and describes it as a way to keep calls on 4G LTE rather than falling back to 2G/3G.

For Talk Home users who see 2G during every call:

  1. update phone software
  2. enable VoLTE/4G Calling
  3. restart
  4. test again
  5. confirm handset compatibility
  6. contact support if fallback continues

As UK legacy networks are retired, this is increasingly worth getting right.

Do You Need a New Phone?

Not automatically.

Check first:

  • settings
  • software
  • SIM
  • provider support

But if your handset genuinely cannot support VoLTE on the network you use, replacing it may eventually become necessary for reliable voice service.

Ofcom advises customers using older devices to check how legacy-network switch-offs may affect them.

Should You Force 4G Only?

Be careful.

If VoLTE is not working and you force a device to use LTE only, you may remove the very 2G fallback that currently allows your calls to connect.

Fix VoLTE first.

Do not hide the symptom by disabling the only voice route the phone has.

2G Calls Are a Warning About the Future

Today, your call may still connect.

That’s good.

But the 2G icon tells you something useful:

your phone isn’t using modern 4G voice for that call.

With UK 3G already gone and 2G retirement approaching over the coming years, that is worth investigating now.

The goal is not simply getting the 2G icon to disappear.

It is making sure your handset, SIM and provider are ready for how mobile voice works next.
