5G Drops During Calls

You are happily browsing on 5G, somebody rings you, and the little 5G icon at the top of the screen suddenly becomes 4G or LTE.

Then the call ends and 5G pops back up.

It looks like the network has gone backwards for five minutes, but on many phones this is completely normal.

The usual reason is simple: your mobile data is using 5G, while your voice call is being carried over 4G using VoLTE.

Unless your phone, plan and local network all support Voice over 5G, also known as VoNR, the phone may move to LTE when the call starts.

The 5G That Vanished Every Time Mum Called

Omar noticed the pattern on his commute.

His phone showed 5G while he streamed music.

Then his mum rang.

4G.

Call ended.

5G again.

After a week of this, he was convinced something was wrong with the SIM.

Nothing was.

His phone was using 5G for data but relying on VoLTE for voice. The phone simply moved onto the network layer that could actually handle the call.

What happens What it usually means
5G becomes 4G during call Voice is using VoLTE
5G stays throughout call VoNR may be active
Data still works on 4G during call VoLTE is doing its job
Phone drops to 2G VoLTE may not be available/configured
5G returns after hanging up Normal network switching

Most 5G Was Built on Top of 4G

A lot of the 5G people have used over the past few years has been 5G Non-Standalone, or NSA.

That means the phone gets a 5G radio connection for fast data, but parts of the network still rely on existing 4G infrastructure.

Voice often remains on VoLTE.

This is why seeing 5G before a call does not automatically mean the voice part of the call will use 5G.

The phone may be doing exactly what it was designed to do.

VoNR Changes That

Voice over New Radio, or VoNR, lets calls stay on a 5G Standalone network.

EE currently calls this 5G Calling. Its support page says Voice over New Radio became available on compatible 5G+ devices from 6 June 2025, provided both 5G Standalone and Voice over 5G are enabled. EE also says its 5G+ service is available in more than 550 UK towns and cities.

But that does not mean every UK phone, network, plan or location supports it.

Apple’s current iPhone guidance says 5G Standalone and Voice Over 5G Standalone settings may appear depending on the market and network provider.

So if those settings are missing, your phone may simply not have VoNR available on that service.

Should You Try to Stop the Switch?

Usually, no.

VoLTE is not some ancient fallback you need to escape from.

It provides HD voice and allows mobile data to keep working during the call.

If your call sounds clear and your data keeps working, a 5G-to-4G switch is mostly a technical detail.

What would be more suspicious is a drop from 5G all the way to 2G, or losing mobile data entirely during every call.

That could point towards VoLTE not being active.

Check the Voice Settings

On iPhone:

Settings > Mobile Service > Voice & Data

On supported networks you may see options for 5G, 5G Standalone and Voice Over 5G Standalone.

On Android, the wording varies, but look under:

Settings > Connections / Network & Internet > Mobile Networks

You may find VoLTE, 5G Calling or VoNR.

Keep the phone software updated as well.

New calling technologies often depend on both network support and the correct carrier software being installed on the handset.

Where Talk Home Mobile Fits

Talk Home Mobile currently confirms support for VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling on compatible devices. Its VoLTE page explains that calls remain on 4G LTE rather than falling back to 2G or 3G, allowing customers to continue browsing or streaming while speaking.

Talk Home also provides 5G data on compatible devices in 5G coverage areas.

Its current public information confirms VoLTE rather than VoNR, so seeing the phone use 4G for a Talk Home voice call while returning to 5G afterwards can be perfectly normal.

The important thing is that the call remains clear and mobile data continues working.

Final Thoughts

5G disappearing during a call does not automatically mean your phone has a problem.

In many cases, 5G is handling your data while 4G VoLTE handles your voice.

VoNR is gradually moving voice onto 5G Standalone too, but support still depends on the network, phone, plan and location.

So if the icon changes from 5G to 4G when your mate rings, don’t start resetting the phone.

Sometimes 4G has simply been given the talking shift.
