Why Is 5G Upload Speed Slower

Run a 5G speed test and the result can look slightly ridiculous. 

Download: 180Mbps. Upload: 18Mbps. 

Your first thought might be that something is wrong with the network. Usually, there isn’t. 

Mobile networks have traditionally been built around the way most people use their phones: downloading far more than they upload. We stream films, scroll social feeds, load websites and download apps all day long. Networks therefore give a bigger slice of their available capacity to traffic travelling towards your phone. 

Uploads have to make do with less. 

The Video That Downloaded in Seconds but Took Ages to Upload 

Jake noticed this after editing a video on his phone. 

Downloading the original clips had been quick. Streaming reference videos was fine too. 

Then he tried uploading the finished file to cloud storage. 

Suddenly his flashy 5G connection felt considerably less flashy. 

A speed test explained why. He was getting around 150Mbps down but barely 15Mbps up. 

That’s not unusual. 

In Opensignal’s January 2026 UK measurements, Three averaged 187Mbps for 5G downloads but 20.2Mbps for uploads. Vodafone measured 130.9Mbps down versus 14.1Mbps up, while EE recorded 92.2Mbps down and 16Mbps up.

That gap is built into how today’s mobile networks tend to operate. 

5G Gives More Room to Downloads 

A lot of mid-band 5G uses Time Division Duplex, or TDD. 

Instead of giving uploads and downloads separate frequencies all the time, TDD lets them share the same spectrum at different moments. 

The network decides how much time goes in each direction. 

GSMA explains that mobile traffic has historically been heavily weighted towards downloads, so TDD networks can allocate more transmission time to downlink traffic.  

That makes sense when millions of customers are mainly watching Netflix and TikTok. 

It feels less clever when you’re trying to upload 4K footage from a car park. 

Your Phone Has Less Muscle Than the Mast 

There’s another problem. 

A mobile mast has large antennas, plenty of power and sophisticated network equipment. 

Your phone has to transmit data back using a tiny antenna while also fitting inside your pocket and surviving until bedtime. 

Higher-frequency 5G signals can make that harder because uplink signals from the handset have less power to play with. 

That is why uploads may suffer sooner when you move indoors, travel farther from the mast or put several walls between yourself and the network. 

If upload speed collapses beside the kitchen but improves near the window, the phone may simply be struggling to get its signal back to the mast. 

Congestion Still Gets Involved 

Uploads share network capacity too. 

If lots of people nearby are posting videos, backing up photos or joining video calls, available uplink capacity can become crowded. 

This matters increasingly because phones are no longer just consumption devices. 

We’re uploading TikToks, livestreams, cloud backups, Teams calls and AI inputs all day. 

The network design is having to catch up with us. 

Can You Improve 5G Upload Speed? 

Before blaming the network, try another location. 

Move near a window or outdoors, then repeat the test. 

Also avoid running several tests one after another. The first result tells you far more than six increasingly obsessive tests from the same sofa. 

If the problem only happens indoors, signal strength is probably involved. 

If upload speed falls every evening, congestion becomes more likely. 

And if 4G strangely gives a better upload than 5G in one location, don’t panic. The phone may be connecting to a stronger or less congested 4G layer. 

The biggest number beside the signal icon does not always win. 

Where Talk Home Mobile Fits

For everyday browsing and streaming, download performance usually matters most. For creators, cloud users and anyone regularly sending big files, upload performance deserves just as much attention.

5G upload speeds are usually slower because mobile networks have spent years optimising themselves around one obvious fact: 

We download loads of stuff. 

Historically, we uploaded much less. 

That balance is changing quickly, but today’s networks still tend to favour downloads. 

So that 180Mbps down and 18Mbps up result isn’t your phone having a breakdown. 

It’s a decent snapshot of what the network was built to prioritise.
