Standalone vs Non-Standalone 5G

Non-Standalone 5G uses 5G radio equipment while still relying partly on the older 4G network behind the scenes. 

Standalone 5G goes further. It uses a dedicated 5G core, so the entire connection is built around newer technology rather than borrowing bits from 4G. 

Both may appear as a normal 5G symbol on your phone. The difference is mostly hidden under the bonnet. 

Think of Non-Standalone as adding a shiny new extension to an older house. Standalone is the proper rebuild, plumbing and all. 

Why did early 5G still need 4G? 

Replacing an entire mobile network does not happen over a quiet weekend. 

When UK operators began launching 5G, they upgraded the radio equipment connecting phones to mobile masts first. Existing 4G systems continued handling other parts of the connection. 

This allowed networks to offer faster data much sooner without waiting for every piece of infrastructure to be replaced. 

It was a sensible shortcut, and it worked. 

Standalone 5G is the next stage. With a dedicated core, the network can respond more quickly, manage traffic more efficiently and support features that the earlier setup could not handle as well. Vodafone describes its Standalone service as a fully upgraded network rather than one still depending on 4G infrastructure.

Would you actually notice the difference? 

Sometimes. Just not every time you open Instagram. 

Maya upgraded to a compatible phone shortly after Standalone 5G arrived in her area. She spent the morning running speed tests around Manchester, expecting the sort of numbers worth showing off in the group chat. 

Outside the station, the results were impressive. 

Inside her office, everything felt fairly normal. WhatsApp did not open with added drama, and her lunch-break scrolling remained much the same. 

The real difference appeared at a packed event a few weeks later. Maya’s video call stayed usable while several friends struggled to upload photos. 

That is where Standalone 5G may prove more useful. 

It is not just about downloading a film before the kettle boils. It is designed to offer better capacity and more reliable performance when loads of people are trying to use the network together. 

What is Standalone 5G meant to improve? 

One benefit is lower latency – the delay between sending an instruction and receiving a response. 

That matters for mobile gaming, livestreaming and other services where even a small pause can be noticeable. 

Standalone also supports network slicing. This allows an operator to create specialised sections of the network for different purposes, such as emergency services, businesses or crowded venues. 

Vodafone launched what it described as the UK’s first commercial 5G network-slicing service in April 2026. 

For ordinary users, the practical benefit is simpler: the network should become better at handling different demands rather than throwing everything into one enormous digital queue. 

How widely available is it? 

Standalone coverage is growing, but it is not everywhere yet. 

Ofcom reported in May 2026 that outdoor Standalone 5G coverage ranged from 49% to 85% across the three UK mobile operators that had deployed it. That was up from a range of 47% to 65% in July 2025. 

EE, O2 and Vodafone market their newer Standalone services using names such as 5G+. Access may depend on your area, handset, SIM and mobile plan. 

Your phone may also move between Standalone 5G, Non-Standalone 5G and 4G without making a song and dance about it. 

That is normal. 

Do you need a new phone? 

Possibly. 

The handset must support the Standalone technology and network bands used by your provider. Some networks may also require an eligible plan and a newer SIM or eSIM. 

There is no need to bin a perfectly good phone just to chase the newest version of 5G. 

Non-Standalone 5G and strong 4G remain more than capable of handling calls, streaming, maps and everyday browsing. 

When buying your next handset, however, checking for Standalone support makes sense – especially when you plan to keep it for several years. 

What UK users should remember 

Non-Standalone gave the UK a quicker route into 5G by building on existing 4G infrastructure. 

Standalone is the more complete version, with a dedicated 5G core and more room for improved reliability, lower delay and smarter network services. 

The change may not feel dramatic every day. 

And that is fine. 

The best network upgrade is often the one you barely notice because your video keeps playing, your call stays connected and the loading circle finally gives it a rest.
