Smartphone with Wi-Fi calling icon, unlocked padlock, UK map, and blocked signal visual showing Wi-Fi calling support on unlocked phones.

An unlocked phone should feel simple.

    You buy a UK SIM.

    You put it in.

    Calls work.

    Data works.

So Wi-Fi Calling should work too, right?

    Not always.

This is where people get annoyed, and honestly, fair enough. The phone is unlocked. The SIM is active. The Wi-Fi is strong. But the Wi-Fi Calling option is missing, greyed out, or just refuses to turn on.

The simple answer is this: an unlocked phone can still fail to support UK Wi-Fi Calling if the device model, software, carrier settings, firmware region, SIM profile or mobile network does not fully support the feature.

In plain English: unlocked means the phone can accept other SIMs.

It does not always mean every network feature will work.

    Quick Facts

    Fact What It Means
Apple says Wi-Fi Calling lets you make or receive calls over Wi-Fi where there is little or no mobile coverage. It is designed for poor indoor signal areas.
Apple says if Wi-Fi Calling is not working, check that your carrier offers it and your device has the latest software. Carrier support and software matter, even on unlocked phones.
Google says if the Wi-Fi Calling option is missing on Android, the carrier may not support the feature. The setting can disappear if the network profile does not allow it.
Samsung says Wi-Fi Calling may not be available on all carriers or devices. Some Android phones support the feature only with selected networks or software versions.
Ofcom says Wi-Fi Calling can help people make calls without decent mobile signal by using broadband instead. It is useful for indoor dead zones, rural homes and thick-walled buildings.
Talk Home Mobile says its plans include HD VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling at no extra cost. Talk Home users still need a compatible, updated handset.

First, What Does “Unlocked” Actually Mean?

Unlocked simply means your phone is not tied to one mobile network.

So if a phone is unlocked, it can usually accept a SIM from another provider.

    That is great.

But Wi-Fi Calling is not just about accepting the SIM.

It depends on a deeper set of checks between the phone, SIM, network and software.

    Your phone needs to know:

    • Does this provider support Wi-Fi Calling?
    • Is this exact device model approved?
    • Are the right carrier settings installed?
    • Is VoLTE active?
    • Is the software updated?
    • Is the SIM profile provisioned for Wi-Fi Calling?
    • Does the phone’s regional firmware support the feature?

That is why a phone can be unlocked and still not show Wi-Fi Calling.

    Annoying, but common.

Zara’s Story: “The Phone Was Unlocked, But the Toggle Was Missing”

Zara bought an unlocked Samsung phone online.

    It accepted her UK SIM.

    Data worked.

    Calls worked.

But Wi-Fi Calling was nowhere in settings.

    She searched everywhere.

Connections. SIM settings. Mobile networks. Nothing.

The issue was not the SIM. It was the phone’s regional software. The model had been made for another market, and the UK network settings did not fully support Wi-Fi Calling on that version.

    That is the trap.

    The phone was unlocked.

    But not fully UK-feature compatible.

    Why Imported Phones Cause Problems

Imported phones are one of the biggest reasons Wi-Fi Calling does not work properly in the UK.

A phone bought from the USA, UAE, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, China or another region may look exactly like the UK model.

    Same brand.

    Same colour.

    Same storage.

    Same shiny box.

But inside, the model number and firmware can be different.

    That can affect:

    • Wi-Fi Calling
    • VoLTE
    • 4G Calling
    • 5G bands
    • Carrier settings
    • Emergency calling setup
    • Network optimisation
    • eSIM support

On Android especially, regional firmware can control which carrier features appear. Samsung also notes that Wi-Fi Calling settings may vary depending on carrier.

So yes, your imported phone might work for normal calls and data, but still miss Wi-Fi Calling.

    Why VoLTE Matters Too

Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE often sit close together.

VoLTE lets your phone make calls over 4G LTE. Wi-Fi Calling lets your phone make calls over Wi-Fi when mobile signal is weak.

Some networks and devices need VoLTE properly enabled before Wi-Fi Calling behaves correctly. Samsung even notes that on some phones and carriers, VoLTE must be turned on to activate Wi-Fi Calling.

This matters more now because Ofcom says 3G mobile networks in the UK are now switched off, while 2G networks are gradually being switched off.

So modern calling relies more on 4G, VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling.

If your phone struggles with VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling may struggle too.

Common Reasons Wi-Fi Calling Does Not Work

    Problem What It Means
Imported phone Regional firmware may not support UK carrier features
Missing carrier settings Phone does not receive the right network profile
Unsupported model Network supports Wi-Fi Calling, but not on that handset
Old software Phone needs a system or carrier update
VoLTE not active Wi-Fi Calling may depend on modern voice settings
SIM not provisioned Provider may need to enable the feature
Dual SIM confusion Wrong SIM selected for calls or data
    Weak Wi-Fi Wi-Fi Calling needs stable Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi blocking it Some hotspots do not work well with Wi-Fi Calling

Apple says not all Wi-Fi networks work with Wi-Fi Calling, and recommends trying a different Wi-Fi network if the feature does not work.

So sometimes the phone is fine.

    The Wi-Fi is the problem.

Where Talk Home Mobile Fits In

Talk Home Mobile says HD VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling are included at no extra cost, and that Wi-Fi Calling keeps users connected even where there is no signal.

It also says most latest smartphones with updated software support these features, but users should check handset settings or the device guide.

So if you use Talk Home Mobile and Wi-Fi Calling is not working, check this order:

    1. Is your phone unlocked?
    1. Is it a UK-compatible model?
    1. Is the software updated?
    1. Is VoLTE enabled?
    1. Is Wi-Fi Calling visible in settings?
    1. Is your Talk Home SIM active?
    1. Is the correct SIM selected on dual-SIM phones?
    1. Have you restarted the phone?
    1. Have you tried another Wi-Fi network?
    1. Have you reset network settings?

If the toggle is completely missing, the phone model or carrier profile may not support it properly.

What to Do Before Buying an Unlocked Phone

Before buying an unlocked phone for UK use, especially from abroad, check:

    • Exact model number
    • UK 4G and 5G band support
    • VoLTE support
    • Wi-Fi Calling support
    • UK firmware availability
    • eSIM or physical SIM support
    • Return policy
    • Whether the seller says “global version” or “UK version”
    • Whether your provider supports that model

    “Unlocked” is not enough.

    Look for “UK compatible” too.

That one detail can save a lot of faff later.

    Quick Fixes to Try

If Wi-Fi Calling does not work:

    • Restart the phone
    • Update iOS or Android
    • Check carrier settings
    • Turn VoLTE on
    • Turn Wi-Fi Calling off and on
    • Try another Wi-Fi network
    • Reset network settings
    • Reinsert the SIM
    • Check dual-SIM settings
    • Contact your provider

Apple recommends restarting, checking Wi-Fi Calling is on, trying another Wi-Fi network, and resetting network settings if needed.

    Final Thoughts

Some unlocked phones do not support UK Wi-Fi Calling because unlocking only removes network restrictions.

It does not guarantee full feature compatibility.

Wi-Fi Calling depends on the phone model, software, carrier settings, SIM provisioning, VoLTE support and sometimes regional firmware.

For Talk Home Mobile users, Wi-Fi Calling and HD VoLTE are included at no extra cost on compatible devices, which is great for indoor signal problems. But the phone still needs to support the feature properly.

    The simple rule is this:

Do not just ask, “Is the phone unlocked?”

Ask, “Will this exact phone support UK VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling?”

That is the difference between a phone that technically works and a phone that works properly.
