Why 5G Speeds Change

You can sit in exactly the same chair, run two 5G speed tests five minutes apart and get results that look like they came from different networks. 

One says 240Mbps. 

The next says 83Mbps. 

You haven’t moved. The phone hasn’t changed. Nobody has stolen half the mast. 

Mobile networks are simply far more dynamic than fixed broadband. 

Ofcom says performance can change because of local mast capacity, congestion, distance from the site, surrounding buildings, weather, the phone itself and even the materials around you.  

Same Sofa, Three Completely Different Results 

Aman was testing 5G after switching mobile plans. 

First test: 196Mbps. 

Very nice. 

He ran another because, naturally, one result wasn’t enough. 

Second test: 118Mbps. 

Third: 231Mbps. 

By test number four he’d stopped checking whether the network was good and started conducting a small personal research project. 

Nothing was necessarily wrong. 

A speed test measures what’s available at that exact moment

Ookla describes each user-initiated test as a snapshot tied to a specific time, place, device and network.  

Change the conditions slightly and you change the result. 

The Mast Is Shared With Everyone Else 

Your 5G connection isn’t a private pipe running between your phone and the network. 

You’re sharing local capacity. 

At 3am, the mast may have very little to do. 

At 5:30pm, people are commuting, streaming video, scrolling social media and tethering laptops. 

Ofcom specifically lists network loading and peak-time congestion among the factors that affect mobile performance.  

What changed? What can happen to the test? 
More users join the mast Speed drops 
Phone selects another cell Result changes 
Signal quality changes Throughput falls or rises 
You move deeper indoors 5G weakens 
Network switches band Speed changes 
Different test server Result may shift 

You don’t even need to notice these things happening. 

The phone handles most of it quietly. 

Full Bars Don’t Tell the Whole Story 

Signal bars are useful, but they’re pretty blunt instruments. 

A strong-looking signal doesn’t tell you how crowded the mast is. 

It doesn’t tell you which 5G frequency is being used. 

And it doesn’t tell you whether the backhaul carrying traffic away from the mast is busy. 

Ofcom’s mobile checker makes a similar distinction between coverage and performance. You can have 5G coverage and still experience very different real-world performance depending on local conditions.  

So don’t treat five bars as a contractual promise of 300Mbps. 

They’re bars, not a speed guarantee. 

Your Phone May Change the Connection Underneath You 

Modern phones constantly make network decisions. 

One moment you might be using a strong 5G layer. Moments later, the device could move to another band, cell or even temporarily rely more heavily on 4G. 

Google’s current Pixel guidance says mobile speed and strength can vary with network type, traffic and distance from network antennas.  

That explains why a result can change without your feet moving an inch. 

The network is moving around you instead. 

How to Get a More Useful Result 

If you’re comparing networks or checking a problem, don’t judge everything from one test. 

Run tests at different times of day. 

Use roughly the same location and keep the phone in the same position. 

If possible, use the same test service and server. 

Then look for a pattern. 

If results range between 150 and 220Mbps, that may simply be normal mobile variation. 

If they repeatedly fall to 2Mbps every weekday at 6pm, you’ve learned something much more useful. 

That’s probably not your imagination.

5G speed tests jump around because mobile networks are alive. 

People join and leave cells. 

Phones switch bands. 

Signal quality changes. 

Traffic rises and falls. 

A speed test is one photograph from all of that movement. 

So if test one says 210Mbps and test two says 145Mbps, don’t immediately start resetting the phone. 

Give the network a chance to be a mobile network.
